Bio:

The man known as Nathan Carrow was once a slave in Jamaica, brought over from the West Indies on the slave ships from Spain.

As a teenager, Carrow was once owned by a wealthy sugar cane merchant who used him as nothing more than a beast of burden, hauling plows through field and carrying things for his master. He never broke Nathan’s spirit though and during the slave rebellion in 1760 he escaped, murdering his former master when he found him about to kill a young girl (later his wife). The now free teenager had escaped but found himself a murderer and on the run from the ruling British.

Nathan travelled from port to port with his “wife” fleeing the British and trying to find honest work. Luckily his size and the lessened slave trade made it easy to find work on the docks and he soon made a decent (although not equal) wage as a dock worker.

In 1671, Nathan (now 29 years old) had a small home, a decent job, a wife and a baby on the way on the island of Guadeloupe, everything he could have ever wanted… until the Spanish attacked. The town was spared but the docks and surrounding areas were leveled, Nathan’s home took a direct hit from the cannon fire. Fortunately Nathan had not been home, he was at the docks when the attack occurred but his wife had been, she was killed as was the baby.

In the aftermath, mad with rage and grief, he began drinking himself almost to death. During this time that he drank too much at a dockside tavern and was conscripted into the crew of Captain Barnabus & the Raven. Nathan awoke in the hold of the Raven with his fellow conscriptee’s and soon they were given the choice, join the crew or swim back to land (the shoreline was not visible). Nathan took Barnabus’ measure and asked if he would be able to kill some spaniards along the way, Barnabus smiled at this and told him yes. Nathan agreed to join but not as a slave, Barnabus informed that there were no slaves aboard only free men who had made the choice to stay. Nathan stayed.

Over the next 16 years Nathan made himself invaluable to Barnabus, becoming his first mate and all around confidant. When they took Annabelle Stuart’s ship and Barnabus took Annabelle as his own it was Nathan that was responsible for her training and protection. When she took her own ship Barnabus asked his oldest friend to watch over her, Nathan (now 45) agreed and has been with Captain Anna ever since.
